28/01 : Academic Talk Gilles Lafforgue

January 25, 2016 Campus

Gilles Lafforgue, Professor of Economics at Toulouse Business School will present a talk on "Energy, Climate Change and Optimal Mitigation Policies". Amphi MB II, 5pm.

Abstract :

Fossil resources represent almost 80% of primary energy inputs. The energy sector at large accounts for 65% of CO2emissions. These figures come as no surprise: given the constant improvement in methods for exploiting and developing non-conventional resources (such as shale gas), reserves are being depleted at a considerably slower rate than was forecast; since fossil resources still remain highly competitive, the transition to renewable energy is happening only very gradually.
In such a context, how is it possible to limit the effects of climate change?
There are mainly three possibilities: i) energy efficiency improvements, ii) energy substitutions, iii) direct abatement of CO2 emissions (e.g. Carbon Capture and Storage). Of course, these actions are not exclusive and should be mixed.
This talk will focus on the economic instruments required to achieve some given mitigation objectives.
