Abstract:

Professor Rebecca Stott, novelist and historian of science, will explore the many rich and imaginative ways in which poets, natural philosophers, novelists and dramatists in the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries 'cross-pollinated new;narratives about the origins of species. Using a series of case studies from Paris to Derbyshire she will show how literary forms provided a forum where emerging ideas about the evolution of species might be pondered, tested, promoted and dramatised whilst evading the scrutiny of church and state authorities.
