Abstract:
This thesis provides a collection of my recent research contributions. The document is organized in four sections. The first section includes two papers studying how intermediaries in the online advertising market affect the distribution of surplus among publishers and advertisers, depending on the effect on key market outcomes (as ad quantity and the availability of information in ad auctions) when there is multi-homing. The second section includes three papers studying the effects of indirect taxation in imperfectly competitive markets. Specifically, the papers consider taxation when suppliers price their goods or services with multi-part tariffs, markets where suppliers are multiproduct firms, and markets where firms apply second-degree price discrimination by providing multiple versions of their goods. The third section includes three research papers studying the economic implications of transport policy. Specifically, the papers consider the distributional implications of urban congestion pricing, the effects of public transport services on traffic congestion, and the relation between intercity transport connections and gentrification. In the last section, I present two papers studying the policy and market implications of health and environmental crises. In the first of these papers, I study the incentives of local governments to support policies imposed by the national government, using data from the recent Covid 19 health crisis. In the second paper, I study the effect of a recent industrial accident (the Lubrizol fire in Rouen) on the housing market.
